HVAC Explained: Your Guide to Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning

What is HVAC?

HVAC keeps your home and workplace warm in the winter, fresh during spring, cool in the summer, and liveable during fall.

HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. The technology's popularity has spread across the U.S. since its development in the early 1900s. Whether you enjoy the benefit of central heating, an evaporative cooler, and/or other HVAC systems, these modern conveniences have made our lives more healthy and comfortable.

The HVAC Basics: How HVAC Systems Work

It’s hard to believe that there was a time when people couldn’t enjoy a warm building without standing close to a fireplace or when people had to suffer through hot summers without the relief of AC. But, in modern times, we can enjoy the ability to be warm inside when it is below freezing outside. We can appreciate the cool escape a building provides during summer’s warmest days.

Efforts to develop HVAC systems date back to the 17th century, but the technology’s existence is largely due to the Industrial Revolution. Since the development of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, modern engineers have worked hard to make HVAC systems simpler and more efficient.

An HVAC system has many different parts. Its five main components are an air conditioner, furnace, duct system, air handler, and thermostat. Your thermostat acts like a remote control for your home or workplace and is the manager of all other HVAC components.

Your HVAC system receives power from gas or electricity. Most modern AC systems are powered by electricity. However, furnaces tend to receive their energy from gas or oil.

Why HVAC Systems Are Important

It’s no secret that a well-functioning HVAC system increases comfort, but the luxury of modern heating and cooling shouldn’t be understated.

A home without an HVAC system can make normal life difficult. This is because temperature regulation increases productivity and concentration. When your space is too warm, you can become sluggish, dehydrated, and irritable. When your home is too cold, it can decrease your energy and make movement difficult. Either way, temperature regulation is hugely important—and not just for convenience!

HVAC systems can also improve your health. In addition to the obvious benefits of modern AC/heating, such as less diagnosed heat exhaustion and hypothermia, these systems can improve your overall health and well-being. The key is in the second letter: V for ventilation!

Your HVAC system ensures your air is filtered and circulated. This makes the air more breathable by filtering out dust and other allergens, which makes the space safer for those susceptible to allergies and respiratory illnesses.
